Habits

At the heart of our spiritual journey lies a quiet, often invisible truth: the small, repetitive patterns of our daily lives are actively shaping the people we are becoming. We like to imagine that our character is forged in monumental moments of crisis or triumph, but it is actually carved out over time through our everyday habits. These habits function as a form of “long obedience in the same direction,” wearing deep ruts into our minds, our desires, and our actions. When we do not intentionally choose paths of life and truth, our default human impulses, our hunger for immediate satisfaction, our frantic self-protection, and our subtle pride, will happily pave paths of their own. Left to ourselves, we inadvertently become people captive to our own anxieties and cultural currents rather than citizens of the Kingdom of God.
